What is the best way to clean rugs?

Clean rugs

If you invest in a rug for your home, you will want to ensure that rug stays clean and well cared for. If you take care of your rug, it will last longer and have a brighter and fresher appearance in your home. Most rugs will last many years, and the highest quality rugs can even be passed down through generations. To ensure that they look their best and last their longest, you will need to care for them and Clean rugs.

General care for your rug

One of the most important practices in rug care is rotating your rugs on a regular basis. This will ensure that they do not fade or become worn in certain areas. Rugs will wear out and fade, but you can ensure that this occurs evenly across all areas of the rugs that you have purchased.

Sunlight can cause a rug to fade, but if it is not rotated, the sun might only reach certain sections of the rug. This will cause the rug to look lighter in some areas and darker in others. Rotating your rug around will prevent this from happening.

High traffic areas may also affect your rugs. If you have people in your home walking over certain areas of your rugs, they might wear out in an uneven fashion. Try rotating your rugs around, so that all areas are exposed evenly, or you can even try swapping your rugs around your house, to ensure that no single rug receives excessive treatment.

If you are selecting a rug for a high traffic area, you may like to invest in a higher quality rug for this purpose. Higher quality materials will be less likely to become worn, and your rug will have a longer lifespan.

Professional Rug cleaning

Professional carpet cleaners should always be used for rugs that you are investing in for the long-term. By hiring a professional, you will ensure that the highest quality and most appropriate cleaning products are used, and that they are used in the correct fashion. While you may choose to higher or purchase carpet cleaning products and equipment yourself, you will still find greater benefit in hiring a professional person who has knowledge and experience with the rug and carpet industry.

Day-to-day Rug cleaning

Accidents do happen, and there will be days when you need to spot clean rugs. Perhaps food or another substance is spilled and you want to know exactly what to do to rectify the situation.

Soak up the spill using a cloth or paper towel. Keep a mild, wool detergent handy at home, and use this with water to clean the affected area of your rug. Ensure that you dab the rug with the solution, rather than rubbing or scrubbing the rug, as this could either damage the rug, or cause the spill to spread.

Keep your rugs dry

If placing rugs outdoors ensure that they are designed for this purpose. All indoor rugs should not be exposed to water or damp areas, as mould and mildew could arise. Also remember that you can purchase rugs that are especially designed for bathrooms and kitchens.

Caring for and cleaning your rugs will ensure that they last a long time, and bring happiness and comfort to your family.

Rug Size Guide

This Rug Size Guide summary is developed by RugSpot to help you choose the right rug.

How Do I choose the right Size?

The size of the rug will depend on the room and the way you’d like to set it.

Living Room – Consider the rug in relation to the furniture around it as it will affect what parts of the rug you will be able see. There are three to fit a rug in a room.

Dining Room – For dining room you’d want to have the rug that covers the table and the chairs.  The rug needs to be big enough so that the chairs are pulled in and out on the rug. To do this you need to measure the length and width of the table.

Next pull out a chair as if you are going to sit on it and measure the distance between the back of the chair and the table.  Double up this distance and add it to both length and width of the table to get an approximate size for the rug you’ll need.

 Example:

Dining Table –  Length 2.00 Meter, Width 1.0 Meter

Chair and the distance allowed for sitting on it, say 0.75 Meter

 Approx Rug –    Length 2.00+2 x0.75 = 3.50 Meters, Width 1.0+0.75×2 = 2.50 Metres

Tip: If your rug is too narrow or too short, chairs legs will fall off the rug and you’ll have difficulty pushing the chair back towards the table. Repeating this may also scratch your floor.
