What are polypropylene rugs?

If you are shopping for rugs, one of the biggest decisions you will need to make is the type of material that your rug will be made from. The visual appearance of your rug will be important, but so will the material, because this will affect the quality of the rug, the ways in which it can be used and cleaned, and the feeling it provides when you touch or walk over it.

Rugs can be made from natural or synthetic fibres, and each material has its own features and benefits. Polypropylene is a popular choice for synthetic rugs, and this article will explore this material, so you can make your own choice about having your rugs made from it.

What is polypropylene?

Polypropylene is a new-age synthetic material that is used in a wide variety of products, other than rugs. These include ropes, stationery, packaging, and furniture. There are numerous benefits for using this material. It has a high tolerance of heat, is easy to colour, does not absorb water like other plastics do, and is durable while also being lightweight and flexible. You most likely have many products already in your home that are made from polypropylene.

Why is polypropylene great for rugs?

Polypropylene rugs are great if you want a synthetic material that is durable, holds colour well, and that retains its shape and texture. Polypropylene rugs can look like wool, and they retain this look even when they have experienced wear and tear. If you are looking for a durable rug that will have many people walking over it, you might like to select one that is made from polypropylene.

Polypropylene rugs are also great if you choose vibrant colours. They dye easily and retain their colours well, even over time and through exposure to sunlight. Polypropylene is also resistant to mould and mildew, so even though you will not want to get your rug wet or damp, you do not need to worry so much about these conditions if you choose a polypropylene rug.

What styles of rugs come in polypropylene?

Polypropylene rugs are made in a diverse range of styles. You can purchase rugs made from this material that are traditional or contemporary in design. Children’s rugs are also often made from polypropylene, and so are shaggy rugs which have a very long pile. These rugs come in a variety of different colours, designs and textures. Your choice will not be limited if you select this material for your home as it will fit into all styles of homes, new and old.

How to purchase polypropylene rugs online?

Polypropylene rugs can be purchased online. You can browse through a wide catalogue of rugs that are made from this material, and then have your chosen rug delivered straight to your home. This is a great option if you do not have access to quality rug stores in your local area, or if you are on the hunt for the most perfect rug to suit you and your family.

When you shop online for rugs, ensure that you make the most of the samples that the store can send out to you. If you are unsure if a material or style is suitable for your home, examine and test the samples that store can send you, before you make your final purchase.

Rug Size Guide

This Rug Size Guide summary is developed by RugSpot to help you choose the right rug.

How Do I choose the right Size?

The size of the rug will depend on the room and the way you’d like to set it.

Living Room – Consider the rug in relation to the furniture around it as it will affect what parts of the rug you will be able see. There are three to fit a rug in a room.

Dining Room – For dining room you’d want to have the rug that covers the table and the chairs.  The rug needs to be big enough so that the chairs are pulled in and out on the rug. To do this you need to measure the length and width of the table.

Next pull out a chair as if you are going to sit on it and measure the distance between the back of the chair and the table.  Double up this distance and add it to both length and width of the table to get an approximate size for the rug you’ll need.

 Example:

Dining Table –  Length 2.00 Meter, Width 1.0 Meter

Chair and the distance allowed for sitting on it, say 0.75 Meter

 Approx Rug –    Length 2.00+2 x0.75 = 3.50 Meters, Width 1.0+0.75×2 = 2.50 Metres

Tip: If your rug is too narrow or too short, chairs legs will fall off the rug and you’ll have difficulty pushing the chair back towards the table. Repeating this may also scratch your floor.
