Many colours, patterns and images

Modern rugs are very diverse, and there is much more variation between them than traditional rugs. They can be bright and bold, with creative patterns and images, or they can be minimal and only use neutral colours.

Some choose modern rugs for dramatic statement creative and unique rugs styling, while others use modern rugs for their subtle look, and the way they seamlessly fit in with the furniture, artwork and other decorations. Many rugs come in just one or two colours without any prominent features, so they are perfect for blending with other items.

If you already have a colour scheme or theme that you are following, you will most likely be able to find a contemporary rug that matches. This is the beauty of modern rugs. There are so many colours and designs available, you should find the perfect rug to suit your needs.

A variety of materials

Like all rugs, modern rugs are made from different materials, and you should choose the right material for you and your home, these are available natural fibres such as cotton, wool, silk or Jute. or in synthetic like Polypropylene, Acrylic, Polyester and viscose.

Research the material before purchasing your rug, to ensure that it meets your needs. The material will affect the rug’s lifespan, the way you use and care for it.

A variety of sizes

Contemporary rugs are available in variety sizes and shapes. You can find small rugs, narrow rugs, and super large rugs that will cover most of the floor of a room. When we talk about contemporary rugs, we are not referring to the size or shape of the rug, but the overall style and patterns on it.

When choosing a size consider the space you are trying to fill. Use a measuring tape to measure the space that the rug will go into, and then choose your rug based on that. Try not to buy a rug that is too small as it may look awkward, you will be happier buying the right sized rug than one that is too small.

Show off your style in a contemporary home

Modern rugs are perfect for new homes or those that are following the latest trends. These rugs are perfect for showing off your own unique style and decorating preferences, and a rug can make a dramatic statement to anyone who enters the room.

Rug Size Guide

This Rug Size Guide summary is developed by RugSpot to help you choose the right rug.

How Do I choose the right Size?

The size of the rug will depend on the room and the way you’d like to set it.

Living Room – Consider the rug in relation to the furniture around it as it will affect what parts of the rug you will be able see. There are three to fit a rug in a room.

Dining Room – For dining room you’d want to have the rug that covers the table and the chairs.  The rug needs to be big enough so that the chairs are pulled in and out on the rug. To do this you need to measure the length and width of the table.

Next pull out a chair as if you are going to sit on it and measure the distance between the back of the chair and the table.  Double up this distance and add it to both length and width of the table to get an approximate size for the rug you’ll need.

Dining Table –  Length 2.00 Meter, Width 1.0 Meter

Chair and the distance allowed for sitting on it, say 0.75 Meter

 Approx Rug –    Length 2.00+2 x0.75 = 3.50 Meters, Width 1.0+0.75×2 = 2.50 Metres

Tip: If your rug is too narrow or too short, chairs legs will fall off the rug and you’ll have difficulty pushing the chair back towards the table. Repeating this may also scratch your floor.
