Lounge room rugs

choosing lounge room rugs

A bright and colourful rug can lift the mood in your home, and make winter months more bearable. Lounge rooms should be inviting and relaxing places for the entire family to hang out in, so why not make yours absolutely special, by choosing a great looking rug from RugSpot online? Here are some tips for finding the perfect lounge room rug for your family

Buy the right sized rug

Lounge room rugs need to be the right size, so arrange your furniture in the positions that you want them, and measure the size that your rug needs to be. Your furniture, including lounges and chairs, can either be placed on top of the edges of your rug, or completely off your rug. For the best look however, either place all of your items off your rug, or all your items on your rug – not a mixture of both options.

Lounge room rugs come in different sizes and shapes, so you will need to select one that is actually suited to the area you want to use it in. This could possibly be the biggest factor to consider when rug shopping, so it would be wise to start shopping by size and shape.

Choose the right material

Lounge room rugs are available in different types of materials, and these will affect the look of your rug, the quality of your rug, and also how long it lasts in great condition. If you see a cheap rug that you like, ensure you check out the material and ensure that you’re not making too many compromises. Rugs come in both natural materials like wool and cotton, and synthetic materials like polyester and PVC. Learn about the material of the lounge room rugs that you buy, as these will help you make the best choice and also help you care for them properly after you have placed them in your home.

Express yourself with style

Lounge room rugs are available in two different styles – contemporary or traditional. Both styles can look great in any home, however they will create different effects. Traditional rugs are more suited to older or maturely-styled homes. They come in oriental colours and feature intricate designs. They have been popular for a very long time, and are still used proudly in homes today.

Contemporary or modern rugs take a completely different approach in style. They are brighter, bolder and fresher in appearance and follow the latest trends in home décor, rather than old traditions. Contemporary rugs are very different to each other, which means you should be able to find a lounge room rug that is perfect for your preferences and needs.

Learn how to care for your rug

When you purchase a lounge room rug, ensure that you get tips and tricks on how to care for and protect your investment. All rugs should last a very long time, and maintain their look without fading or falling apart. Different rugs need to be cared for in different ways, so talk to your rug supplier about the best way to care for your purchase.

Consider quality

How long do you expect your lounge room rug to last? Some families invest in high-quality rugs that are very valuable, because they want to pass them onto the next generation. Some rugs are collector’s items, including handmade rugs, while others are great quality but are perfect if you don’t expect them to last forever.

Rug Size Guide

This Rug Size Guide summary is developed by RugSpot to help you choose the right rug.

How Do I choose the right Size?

The size of the rug will depend on the room and the way you’d like to set it.

Living Room – Consider the rug in relation to the furniture around it as it will affect what parts of the rug you will be able see. There are three to fit a rug in a room.

Dining Room – For dining room you’d want to have the rug that covers the table and the chairs.  The rug needs to be big enough so that the chairs are pulled in and out on the rug. To do this you need to measure the length and width of the table.

Next pull out a chair as if you are going to sit on it and measure the distance between the back of the chair and the table.  Double up this distance and add it to both length and width of the table to get an approximate size for the rug you’ll need.

 Example:

Dining Table –  Length 2.00 Meter, Width 1.0 Meter

Chair and the distance allowed for sitting on it, say 0.75 Meter

 Approx Rug –    Length 2.00+2 x0.75 = 3.50 Meters, Width 1.0+0.75×2 = 2.50 Metres

Tip: If your rug is too narrow or too short, chairs legs will fall off the rug and you’ll have difficulty pushing the chair back towards the table. Repeating this may also scratch your floor.
